So on Friday night, the 5 of us were – I thought – going to surprise our dear friend Buerkle by throwing him a “Man Shower” to say “hey, we support you as a soon-to-be- daddy”.
The plan was we would all show up at their house at 5pm. Then us 3 girls would take off and leave the 3 men to scratch and growl and be manly and Buerkle would think they were just going to have Man Time.
6pm all us girls would come BACK to the house, and be like “Surprise! Happy Man Shower!”
So we show up at 5pm, and then run away quickly before the scratching and growling and the removing of shirts gets too far underway [we all married big hairy men]. We 3 girls head out to McMennamin’s. “Don’t eat too much because we’ll have dinner for us all when you get back for the shower,” say the men.
We ignore them and chow down the ever-addictive Cajun Tots, some chips and bean dip, and a drink.
6pm. Oops. We’re still at McMennamin’s. We get a hushed phone call from my husband in the bathroom. Then we get another call from Steve who was “out to get some air”. The whole time we’re [very lovingly] making fun of our husbands for how uptight and feminine they are about their party-planning. We try to reassure them that we’re really on our way and everything will be okay.
Sometime after 6pm: we arrive and sneak around to the backdoor to surprise Buerkle. The sliding glass door is locked. Korie looks through the window and says, “The table’s all fancy.”
We knock.
Steve opens the door, and all the guys say, “Welcome to Your party.”
The table was set with flowers at each of our places, candles and chocolate, and a “thank-you for being an awesome wife” card. I had to scrape my jaw off the floor. It was a rockin’ surprise!
We spent the evening eating potato leek soup that Buerkle made, bread and chocolate things. We played Apples to Apples and laughed our heads off, and we finished off the evening with foot rubs and the most romantic movie in the world: Live Free Die Hard.
We have the best husbands ever [okay, you might have a great one too, but we like ours].
