Puppies are Not Children…

But they sure are hecka cute.  Yes, ladies and gentlemen, Heather España is blogging about puppies.  What is happening to the world?  Let me explain.

So, a couple days ago Mike and I were just going along happily in a child-less, animal-less lives, and then out of nowhere – I literally cannot remember how we got started on this – we started talking about how it might be a good idea to get a puppy together… you know, as practice for someday having a kid or two.  Totally stereotypical, I know, but even just starting to THINK about getting a puppy has made me see why people go through this process as a Getting Ready For a Baby thing.  And this is why …

I’ve been wanting a Pembroke Welsh Corgi for years, ever since I learned about them from Tasha Tudor who completely rocks.  I am totally excited.  And NOT excited at ALL because of: the barking, the dog hair, the dog urine, and the dog poo.

PLUS the cost of buying the dog, plus the kennel, plus the food, plus the vet bills, plus the little doggy bed and the doggy collar and whatever else these puppy things need.

What if it gets sick?  What about when we travel?  What about company and toddlers?  What about my clients?

Worst of all, albeit a ridiculous fear: what if I turn into one of those scary people who carries photos of their dog in their wallet, and buys it dog costumes for Halloween?!  What if I accidentally start referring to our dog as our KID (no offense Tara) and include its name in our Family Newsletter?!  Granted, we’ve not yet managed to get one of those in the mail, but what if the dog is our INCENTIVE for sending our out a Christmas Newsletter?!!!!  What if I accidentally kill it?  Or somebody else kills it?  Or it grows up to be this like vicious Attack Corgi who steal babies or something?!

All that to say, my husband is really cute because this is what he wants to put his end-of-the year bonus toward.  And I think it’s really sweet.  And I really have wanted a Welsh Corgi for years.  And as soon as I get done reading ALL of the corgi books I could check out at the library, I’ll let you know if we decide to brave the poo.

cherice - We started with a cat, because I think a baby is actually easier than a puppy! I mean, you can put a diaper on a baby…and people help pay for stuff a baby needs (and give you hand-me-downs) so they don’t actually cost that much for the first year, and they have insurance so you don’t have to pay too much for doctor bills (besides paying the insurance part!), and they grow up and get out of the poo stage.

But then again, puppies don’t wake you up five gazillion times in the middle of the night, they don’t breast feed or spit up or cry or have to be held to get anyplace. They can already walk, and they can eat by themselves and they can stay at home by themselves if you want to go on a date.

So it’s a toss-up. =)

Plus puppies are incredibly cute! I hope your deciding goes well, and we’ll look forward to seeing the puppy when we get home in a few weeks, if it exists. (That sounds very existential, but you know what I mean.)

Xenia Kathryn - Oh my goodness! I love corgis!!!!! I hope you get one :) We’d be some happy neighbors, for sure! And we’ll help out anytime, too. That’s so sweet about Mike and his bonus.

We are feeling better now. Shortly after you visited on Monday I got threw up too… then Steve came home and got sick. So I’ve been keeping my distance. But hopefully I’ll see you soon :)

Sherry - I just happened to catch a glimpse of you and Mike hanging out around the Critter Cabana storefront the other night (as I was driving by) and had this curious thought…maybe you were shopping for a puppy.
