Playing with Strobes | Oregon Photographer

Mike gave me red streaks in my hair for Christmas;).  I’ve wanted them forever.  My family hates them, but I like them and Mike likes them so I’m happy.

I just got the Sekonic L-358 Light Meter, so playing with strobe lighting is that much more fun. In case any of you are interested about the behind-the-scenes for the photo:  I used two Alien Bees strobe lights.  The 800watt strobe is directly behind my head with a silver reflector. The 1600watt strobe is to the left of the frame with a brolly box (diffuses the light).  The background is simply the plain white wall in our dining room (I added the texture in Photoshop).

I wanted to play with the backlighting like that to see if I could get the hair extra sharp, and I think it worked.  I used the light meter and then set my camera (in Manual Mode) to ISO 100 (film speed) at f/16 (that’s aperture: amount of light allowed in) at 1/160 of a second (shutter speed).  I preset the focus (manual again) and connected my shutter release cable so I could fire the camera and the strobes while in front of the camera.  Then clicked away.  I looked like an idiot, I’m sure, shaking my head around like crazy.  But it’s fun for the hair movement.

I have a senior shoot coming up tomorrow, and we’re hoping to do some funky/edgy stuff with strobes.  I’ll have a Sneak Peek up for you in a few days.

FYI: if you are in the market for a light meter, the Sekonic L-358 is fabulous.  I found mine brand new on Ebay for $219 which is significanly lower than anywhere else I’ve seen.  Worthwhile investment for sure.

Joel Bock - Yes! That’s awesome. I could post some ridiculous photos of myself messing the strobes, but they aren’t nearly as cool so I think I’ll hold off for now. Looking forward to seeing you soon!

cherice - lovin’ the red streaks! fun pic, too!!!
