The most obvious reason to have an engagement session would be so you have a great photo to put in the newspaper for your anouncement, right? True, that’s one good reason. But it’s not why I love engagement sessions.
An engagment session is the perfect opportunity to spend time and get to know each other. Come the wedding day, you are already comfortable with your photographer and know you’re going to have a good time. When you have a connection with your wedding photographer, you feel far more comfortable in front of the camera. When you’re more comfortable, you’re more yourself. The more you are yourself, the more beautiful and natural your photos will be.
Granted, scheduling an engagement session is not always possible, especially with long-distance weddings. But if you have the opportunity, I highly recommend it.
I also love doing engagement sessions because it makes the complimentary Gallery Cards much more personal [see photo below]. They are super popular with guests. It provides them with the website and password if they want to view the gallery of your engagement and wedding photos, and it’s also 2 beautiful photos of you as a couple [front and back].
NOTE: If you are absolutely unable to do an engagement session before your wedding, ask your photographer if they do Gallery Cards, or something similar. Early on, make sure to email your photographer 1 or 2 photos of you as a couple so they can personalize your cards using those photos instead.
Besides all of that, engagement sessions are just awesomely fun. Any opportunity to get more delicious photos of you as a couple is a good thing
